Appeal following distraction burglary in Droitwich

Detectives from South Worcestershire Proactive CID are asking people to remain vigilant following a distraction burglary in Droitwich yesterday (Tuesday 4 October).

Two women, posing as nurses tricked their way into the home of an elderly lady in St Nicholas Street, Droitwich around lunchtime and proceeded to steal a number of very personal and irreplaceable items.

Detective Inspector Dave Knight said: “We are vigorously investigating this despicable crime which has seen an elderly and vulnerable victim taken advantage of.

“This is a fast-paced investigation, and my aim is to identify and arrest these two individuals at the very earliest possible opportunity.

“I would like to thank the victim’s family who, as well as reporting the crime to us, have asked for information from the community through social media. We have already had a number of calls from the public in response to their posts with some vital information.

“Anyone with any further information on this crime should call 101 quoting incident reference 330i of Tuesday 4 October 2022.

“Anyone that sees any suspicious activity taking place or who believe a crime is in progress should always please call 999.

“Can I ask that you contact loved ones who may be vulnerable, check in on neighbours and remind elderly relatives to never allow strangers or cold callers into their home, no matter how convincing they may. Below is some security advice for everyone to be aware of:

  • Never allow cold-callers into your home
  • If you are unsure about a visitor to your door, ask their name, for identification, who they work for and if they have a contact number you can call to check. Ask them to return later while you make these checks.
  • Make sure your home is kept secure at all times: keep windows and doors locked, switch lights on when going out to make your home looks occupied, use burglar alarms and install security lights on the outside of your property.
  • Keep jewellery and money in a safe place and locked up if possible. Consider installing a safe at home which is securely fixed to the floor or wall. See securedbydesign.comfor police approved safes.

“Please trust me when I say that we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to bring these offenders to Justice. At this stage we do not believe that the suspects live locally, and we have actively followed several leads in our investigation.”

If you have information about a crime but don’t feel comfortable speaking to police, you can speak to the independent charity Crimestoppers. It is 100% anonymous, they never ask your name and they cannot trace your call or I.P address. You can contact them online or by calling 0800 555 111.
